چکیده

Seventeen of twenty known or suspected dwarf galaxy satellites of the Milky Way were discovered through photometric images. Six significant tidal streams are known in the Galactic spheroid, all of which were discovered through photometric surveys. At present, only photometric surveys provide enough sky coverage and depth to probe the shape of the Milky Way. We argue that the Virgo Stellar Stream, which might be a stream or a disrupting dwarf galaxy, has a center 14-19 kpc from the Sun in the direction (l, b) = (300◦, 64◦), using photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). In the process, we demonstrate the importance of large, deep, multi-color, public photometric sky surveys with precision color information. Currently, the most urgent need is for data in the southern hemisphere and at low Galactic latitude. Deeper surveys would also be useful.

Learning about Galactic structure with Gaia astrometry

The Gaia mission is reviewed together with the expected contents of the final catalogue. It is then argued that the ultimate goal of Galactic structure studies with Gaia astrometry should be to build a dynamical model of our galaxy which is capable of explaining the contents of the Gaia catalogue. This will be possible only by comparing predicted catalogue data to Gaia’s actual measurements. To...

Galactic Structure and Stellar Populations

The Milky Way Galaxy offers a unique opportunity for testing theories of galaxy formation and evolution. I discuss how large surveys, both photometric and spectroscopic, of Galactic stars are the keystones of investigations into such fundamental problems as the merging history – and future – of the Galaxy.

Galactic Structure From Infrared Surveys

By combining the 2MASS and DENIS infrared surveys with the USNO-B proper-motion catalog, it will be possible to map the structure of the Galaxy in unprecedented detail. The key parameter that these surveys measure together, but neither measures separately, is t∗ = r∗/v⊥, the time it takes a star moving at transverse speed v⊥ to cross its own radius r∗. This parameter cleanly separates white dwa...

We explore the motivation behind large stellar surveys in Galactic astronomy, in particular, surveys that measure the photometric, phase space and abundance properties of thousands or millions of stars. These observations are essential to unravelling the sequence of events involved in galaxy formation and evolution, although disentangling key signatures from the complexity continues to be very ...

Toward High-precision Measures of Large-scale Structure

I review some results of estimation of the power spectrum of density fluctuations from galaxy redshift surveys and discuss advances that may be possible with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I then examine the realities of power spectrum estimation in the presence of Galactic extinction, photometric errors, galaxy evolution, clustering evolution, and uncertainty about the background cosmology.
